Searching for Sylvia

My goat is named Sylvia.

If you are a theatre person you will laugh knowingly, having got the joke. If you are not you may think it's cute that I named my goat. If you are a farmer you will look at me strangely and know I am not a farmer. This is okay.

It was one winter. I had moved into my grandmothers house in the country. It was a very old house, at least by Californian standards. It is out in the country and the weeds had grown so high it had blown out the moter on my electric lawn mower. So what did I do while my then boyfriend was at work?
I bought a goat.
She was small and cute and cost me $35.

"Look," I said when he got home. We were in this funny stage, so anything new I threw at him could mean disaster.

"Did you buy that?" He questioned.

"Yes. A lawn mower!"

He had that look on he always got when I had gone too far.

You should never leave me alone for too long, I thought. I'm libel to do something which seems like a good idea; and then we get a goat.

Literature and History in Film Class Syllabus

Syllabus
Supplies:
1 ½ binder
Composition Notebook
Black or Blue Pins
No. 2 Pencils

The Goal
This class will be designed to heighten your awareness of the language of film and the impact history and culture makes on the films in different eras, countries, and genres. This class will also look at the discipline of Film Studies, its methodologies, genres and histories. Through an examination of various cinematic forms, styles, and genres, roughly following a historical chronology, the course aims to develop the critical skills crucial to the discourse of Film Studies. Such a critical evaluation of cinema demands an interdisciplinary approach, drawing from such disparate sources as: Aesthetics, Art History, Cultural Studies, Feminism, and Postcolonial Studies. In addition to developing an understanding of the critical tools available to us, the course is designed to provide a wide survey of the world's classic cinema.

Assignments
There will be two group projects over the next year dealing with the different genres, eras, and film makers we are studying, these will involve story boards, screen plays and films you make yourself. You can choose what the style, content and information you cover within classroom provided limitations.
We will be doing a lot of reading about each of the films we will be watching in class and it will be expected for the sake of the in class discussion or debates you have read all of the material and it will be kept in your binder for future reference.
Students should also expect text work, quizzes and tests through out the year as well as some homework. All work, including group work, must be turned in on time, THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.

Unofficial Course Description:

This year we are going to do a lot of reading, thinking, talking and writing about Theatre and Performing Arts impact on other subjects such as English, math, science, physical education, and History. I know many, if not all of you, have probably given this little, if any, thought, and that's okay. But if you stick with the class, you'll be giving it quite a bit. I can tell you not all of you will love getting up on stage and performing but you will start your first step into finding your comfort zone with public speaking. You will also be able to become a more critical thinker broadening your views on the world and finding your own voice as a person.
You will also be able to enjoy and appreciate the amount of time, energy and work people who work in the entertainment business put in. You will learn the technical language of Performing Arts. You will also lean the need for Arts in any great civilization as Shakespeare said “To hold a mirror up to life.”
Portfolio Dates
1. Winter Final: Partner Scene
2. Spring Final: Monologue

Letter To Parents

Dear Parents or Guardians,

My name is Tori Lee Scoles and I will be your son or daughter’s Performing Arts teacher at Patterson High School this year. I am looking forward to the coming year because I believe that theatre is an extension to your child’s other classes expanding their understanding of history, science, math, and English. I know that many students come to theatre class nervous of performing in front of their peers, but I will try to get them more comfortable with speaking in front of large crowds, I will also show them that acting is not the only part of theatre, there is something for everyone.
I received a B.A. from San Francisco State University in Cinema and Jewish Studies and am currently working on my MA in English at the University of Phoenix. I know my subject well and am a founding member of Patterson Repertory Theatre from 2003 to present; acting, directing, teaching workshop classes and working with the community to create theatre in our town.
I am working hard to create a classroom environment where everybody feels respected, valued and comfortable. To do this I work with my students to create a classroom culture that enables everybody to learn to their fullest potential. In the next few days we will be working out the details of our classroom culture, so look for your son or daughter to bring home some information that will spell out the “Classroom Rules” in our Performing Arts class.
My syllabus is on a blogsite, this blogsite will specify when I want the team and individual projects, quizzes and tests, so that nobody ever feels “surprised” by anything. The blogsite will specify how I want the projects, journals, and quizzes done. There are pictures of some of the more intricate projects giving the students examples and letting them know what is expected of them; if you have any questions the best way to get me is through this website. Lastly, I will immediately contact you if your student ever falls below the grade of “C” in my class, and together we’ll figure out the best way to help your students succeed in the class. Working together we can insure your student has the best experience possible this school year.
I am available for “extra help” after school Tuesday through Friday. My classroom is also always open during lunch for students. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me. I’m looking forward to meeting you during “Back to School Night,” and to a fun and productive school year overall.
Sincerely,

Miss Tori Lee Scoles
